These Melissa & Doug chunky puzzles are designed specifically for small children. Unlike the more complex jigsaw puzzles, which have interlocking pieces that join to form a complete picture, the chunky puzzles have individual pieces that fit into cut-out spaces on a painted background.

Each piece is thick-cut and includes a peg, making them easier for little fingers to manipulate. Each of the four wooden puzzles is handcrafted and brightly painted. And as with all of their products, Melissa & Doug states that this toy is made with non-toxic coatings and meets, or exceeds, US toy testing standards.

The "See Inside Numbers" puzzle features numerals 0 through 9 as the removable peg pieces. Under each number is a picture depicting items equaling that number -- for example, three fishes or seven ladybugs -- introducing children to counting concepts and number identification. The "Farm Peek-A-Boo" puzzle depicts a bright red barn with several doors as the removable peg pieces. Behind each door is a picture of a farm animal. Small children will enjoy playing peek-a-boo with the animals while learning their names. The "Fish Colors Mix 'N Match" puzzle features a school of cartoonish fish, each in a different color. The back half of each fish is a removable peg piece. The name of the color of each fish is written under each piece. The pieces are interchangeable, so children can have fun mixing and matching to create new fish while learning color names. The "Shapes" puzzle features eight shapes -- each in a different color -- as the removable peg pieces. The background behind each puzzle piece shows the name of the shape and is the same color as the accompanying puzzle piece.
